I TALK TELLY

WHAT TO WATCH: 7-13 August

This week’s best telly includes Nadiya on her British food adventure, Jodie Whittaker playing a Doctor on BBC One (not that one) and a “New Love Island” (sort of).

Here are the 5 shows you have to watch this week…

1. Nadiya’s British Food Adventure | Monday 7th August at 8:30pm on BBC Two

Every Monday evening for the past few weeks, Nadiya’s British Food Adventure has been a real treat in the schedules.

Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain has proved herself to be a natural, dry and very funny presenter. This week sees her continue on her culinary voyage of discovery across Britain to find and taste the very best that the country has to offer.

She heads to London to discover cutting-edge food produce and her first stop is an unlikely location for a farm, an industrial estate in Beckton in East London,

There she finds Grow Up, an indoor, urban farm that uses hydroponics and aquaponics to grow grow salad without using soil, instead using fish poo and grown indoors using UV instead of sunlight. Whilst there, Nadiya helps feed the fish and harvest watercress before cooking up a tilapia and watercress curry with lemon couscous.

Her next stop is in Holloway, North London, where she meet a Michelin-trained chef who now runs supper clubs in his home, showcasing his revolutionary idea of cooking food with fragrances. Pratap creates a lamb dish cooked with frankincense, and feeling inspired by his creations Nadiya makes an aromatic pistachio cake.

In her own kitchen, Nadiya’s two recipes are dedicated to her experiences of London: the first is a ras el-hanout steak and kidney pie, the best of old traditional London and a modern Capital changed by immigration. Her second recipe is inspired by the delights of her secret guilty pleasure, the city’s chicken take away shops!

She cooks her homemade version which is a real family favourite – crispy chicken, sweet potato fries and barbeque beans.

2. Make Or Break? | Monday 7th August at 10pm on Channel 5

If you’re still mourning the loss of Love Island and haven’t quite got into Celebrity Big Brother yet then Channel 5’s latest reality series, Make Or Break? might just be the show you need to fill the gap.

Mallorca has been swapped for Mexico and the coupling has already happened, in the real world. That’s right, Make Or Break? acts as a make or break holiday for the eight real-world couples who flee their home comforts in the hopes of saving their struggling relationship.

But that’s not all, they won’t be able to relax as each of the couples will be put on a break the second they land, and every 48 hours they’ll recouple/swap partners and the fun will be watching who will stay with their original partner and who will stray.

Will it be as entertaining as Love Island? Probably not, but I’ll certainly be giving it a go.

3Trust Me | Tuesday 8th August at 9pm on BBC One

Ahead of her performance as the new Doctor in Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker plays nurse Cath Hardacre in BBC One’s new psychological thriller Trust Me.

Caring and hard-working, Cath does her best for everyone in the cardiology ward she works on. However, when she raises her concerns about the standards slipping at the hospital her world takes a turn for the worse.

After being sacked for whistle-blowing, Cath turns to her best friend Dr. Ally Sutton, who is leaving her life as an A&E doctor and emigrating to New Zealand with her new husband. At a drunken party Cath finds Ally’s discarded paperwork and makes the desperate decision to take a second chance at life – by stealing her best friend’s identity.

Cath, now calling herself Ally, accepts a job at a failing emergency department in Edinburgh and embarks upon a new life with her young daughter Molly. However, with her good-for-nothing ex-partner Karl trying to spend time with them and a journalist chasing her about the issues at her former hospital, how will Ally cope with leading a double life?

5. My Family, Partition And Me: India 1947 | Wednesday 9th August at 9pm on BBC One

In this new two-part series, Anita Rani explores the human impact of the Partition of India through the intimate stories of four British families, including her own. Using compelling first-hand testimony from British Partition survivors, their children and grandchildren retrace the dramatic journeys they were forced to make during Partition.

Representing the different communities caught up in the violence – Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and British colonial – they travel for the first time to the homes in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh that their families fled in terror. Their journeys include emotional meetings with long-lost family friends, encounters with neighbours of other religions who shielded their family at huge personal risk, and extraordinary stories of courage and fortitude among the horrors of the communal violence that had erupted.

Anita Rani and her mother become the first members of their family to return to the small village in Pakistan where her grandfather lived until 1947. Anita investigates the shocking and distressing events that happened there when her grandfather’s first wife, children and her great grandfather lost their lives.
