Amy Winehouse to be celebrated across the BBC this October

Celebrating 20 years since the release of Back to Black.

This October, 20 years since the release of Amy Winehouse’s seminal album Back to Black, BBC Music will celebrate her life and music with world exclusive programming.

BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, Radio 2 and BBC Sounds will exclusively broadcast Amy Winehouse: Back to Black at 20 (working title), a recording of the Back to Black 20 concert, which takes place on Wednesday 21 October at Roundhouse in Camden, London.

The concert is led by original Back to Black producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, Amy’s long-term musical director Dale Davis, producers Paul O’Duffy and p*nut and Darcus Beese OBE.

It will feature The Amy Winehouse Band performing the album in full, with special guests including Baby Rose, Corinne Bailey Rae, FLO, Jessie Reyez, Jorja Smith, Lianne La Havas, Nia Smith, Sasha Keable, Skye Newman, and Yebba, as well as writer and producer p*nut.

Airing late October on BBC Two, it will be the centrepiece of an afternoon and evening of programming to celebrate Amy’s legacy. A dedicated iPlayer channel will stream some of her most memorable performances captured by the BBC over the years, before joining up with BBC Two to simulcast Amy Winehouse: Back to Black at 20 .

Following the concert, BBC Two will continue the tribute with another chance to watch performances and documentaries about Amy’s life and work.

BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds will broadcast the concert on Monday 26 October within Jo Whiley’s show between 7pm and 9pm.

There will also be another chance to hear the station’s two-part special, Amy Winehouse: Legacy of a Lioness, which will be available on BBC Sounds from Sunday 11 October, in which Alexandra Burke, Ella Henderson, Emeli Sandé, Jessie Ware and Mabel share their favourite Amy songs and discuss how she inspired them.

BBC Radio 6 Music will also celebrate Amy’s legacy on Friday 23rd October with Amy Winehouse Forever from 7am to 9pmm with presenters Nick Grimshaw, Deb Grant, sitting in for Lauren Laverne, Craig Charles, Huw Stephens and Femi Koleoso will reflect on Amy’s contribution to music.

Expect special guests, fan stories and a playlist full of tracks from Amy, her musical heroes and those she inspired. Deb Grant will dedicate 30 minutes of her show to playing artists who featured on Amy’s personal jukebox and hear from Darcus Beese OBE, who signed Amy to Island Records.

Craig Charles will broadcast Amy’s Maida Vale session, which was recorded in 2003 for his Funk and Soul Show and his interview with her from 2006. He’ll also hear from Amy’s musical director Dale Davis and Ade Omotayo, who are both members of The Amy Winehouse Band. And Femi will hear from Amy’s goddaughter and musical mentee, Dionne Bromfield.

6 Music will also broadcast an Amy Winehouse Artist Collection on Tuesday 20th October from 12am to 5am, which will then be available on BBC Sounds.

Programmes featuring in the 6 Music Artist Collection include; Amy Winehouse Live, with highlights from her sets at Athens Ball, London (2004), Summer Sundae, Leicester (2004) and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas (2007); In Their Own Words: Amy Winehouse, with extracts from BBC interviews she gave during her remarkable career; and Amy Winehouse at the BBC, a radio programme in which Jools Holland introduces a selection of her BBC session performances.
