FIRST LOOK Maya

A new psychological thriller from Daisy Haggard starring her and Bella Ramsey.

Channel 4 has today released a first look at Daisy Haggard and Two Brothers' new thriller for Channel 4, Maya, which is co-led by Daisy Haggard and Bella Ramsey.

Forced into a witness protection programme to escape a life-threatening danger, determined and devoted single-mum Anna and her headstrong teenage daughter Maya, leave their London lives and Anna’s parents, Nancy and George, played by Harriet Walter and Tom Courteney, behind, taking on new identities and relocating to a small rural town in Scotland.

Aided by Senior Detective Constable Debs, played by Josie Walker, and Witness Protection Officers Tony and Karen, played by Stuart Bowman and Kiran Sonia Sawar, they try to adjust to their new reality, but the trauma of their past continues to haunt them in the form of two hitmen, Benji and Ted, played by Ben Chaplin and Raphel Famotibe, who are intent on tracking them down.

As the walls close in, it becomes clear that a dangerous and calculating figure from their past, the seemingly charming Bobby, played by Tobias Menzies, is still a looming and very present threat.

The six-part drama marks the directorial debut for creator Daisy Haggard, who co-directs the series alongside Jamie Donoughue.

Darkly comedic and shot through with Haggard’s trademark warmth and humour, Maya promises to be an unmissable, atmospheric psychological thriller that explores themes of predatory male behaviour, family and love, but, above all, is a warm and witty celebration of the special, unbreakable bond shared between mother and daughter.

Filmed entirely on location in Scotland, the series also stars Stuart Bowman, Serena Manteghi, Archie Backhouse, Paul Blair, Sonny Poon Tip, Finlay Shack, Max Fincham, Ash Hunter, Harry Hadden-Paton, Tori Allen-Martin and Isabele Derosa.

Made by Two Brothers Pictures (an All3Media company), in association with All3Media International, Maya has been written and created by Daisy Haggard, who will also serve as Executive Producer, with Harry and Jack Williams, Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer and Daisy Mount serving as Executive Producers for Two Brothers Pictures.

It's produced by Kenny Tanner and co-directed and co-executive produced by Jamie Donoughue, with Si Bell as DOP and Shaheen Baig as Casting Director.

Maya will air on Channel 4
