Netflix's new adaptation has begun filming!

Netflix has today released a first look at their upcoming 6-part adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, as well as final casting as production begins in the UK.

Written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn. the series promises to be a faithful, classic adaptation of Jane Austen's novel with Rufus Sewell starring as the beloved Mr Bennet.

The Bennet sisterhood will feature Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet alongside Rhea Norwood, as Lydia and newcomers Hollie Avery and Hopey Parish in their debut roles of Kitty and Mary.

Louis Partridge will take on Mr Darcy’s nemesis, Mr Wickham with Jamie Demetriou turning his hand to the pompous Mr Collins, Fiona Shaw as the fearsome Lady Catherine de Bourg, Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley and Siena Kelly as Caroline Bingley.

Also joining the cast are Anjana Vasan as Mrs Gardiner, Sebastian Armesto as Mr Gardiner, Rosie Cavaliero as Lady Lucas, Saffron Coomber as Mrs Hurst, James Dryden as Mr Hurst, Justin Edwards as Sir William Lucas, James Northcote as Colonel Forster, Eloise Webb as Harriet Forster and Isabella Sermon as Georgiana Darcy

They join previously announced cast members Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden and Olivia Colman.

Speaking earlier in the year about the new series, writer and executive producer Dolly Alderton said "Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life."

"With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy."

Produced by Lisa Osborne, it'll be executive produced by Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter for Lookout Point, as well as Dolly Alderton and Euros Lyn and Emma Corrin.

Pride and Prejudice will air on Netflix

I’m cautiously optimistic—Netflix adaptations can look gorgeous but sometimes sand off the sharp social comedy, and that’s half the fun of Austen. Random aside, the costume palette talk always sends me down rabbit holes on this site, trying to figure out what colors read “period” without looking drab.

Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine feels like inspired casting—she can make a polite sentence sound like a threat. The “first look” photo lighting also gave me that soft storybook vibe, almost like the watercolor-y look people chase with https://imgg.ai/styles/ghibli—just hopefully less filter-y on screen.

I’m most interested in what they do with Darcy/Elizabeth’s banter—if they nail the rhythm, everything else falls into place. Also, it’s funny how every industry has its own “new version just dropped” excitement—like browsing places to submit ai tool listings and seeing the same rush energy there too.

A 6-part run feels right for Austen—enough room to breathe without padding, but I really hope the pacing doesn’t turn into “slow prestige” for the sake of it. I end up doing silly math on runtimes when shows drop, and CaesarCipher has been weirdly handy for that.

Rufus Sewell as Mr Bennet is honestly the detail that sold me—he can do warmth and exasperation in the same breath. When I’m waiting on casting news like this, I end up procrastinating with stuff like BlockBlast, then I look up and an hour’s gone.
