Ricky Gervais is open to another Derek special... "I miss him most"

The comedian revealed to fans during a live broadcast on Twitter that Derek is the series with the most potential for a return.

At the start of lockdown, Ricky Gervais took it upon himself to speak to fans on a daily basis on Twitter live via Periscope. With hundreds of thousands tuning in every time he did, he reduced the number of broadcasts a week following the release of the second series of After Life on Netflix.

Almost six months on, Ricky continues to broadcast live to fans twice a week, at 6pm BST on Wednesdays and Sundays for half-an-hour, answering questions about his career and anything else his fans choose to ask him... with nothing seemingly off limits.

During his most recent broadcast on Wednesday 9th September, Ricky was asked if he would ever consider going back and making another special of The Office, Extras or Derek.

Considering the options for another special of The Office, Ricky told fans "The Office really doesn't make sense now. I mean there'll be no such thing as an office in a few years. People will go 'What's all this about? Where are they? Why are they all mingling?' - and I did a follow-up, people know where (David) Brent is now. I did that with Life on the Road so that's put to bed."

After questioning the relevance of a "sixty-year-old Andy Millman" from Extras in 2020 he went on to say "Derek I could see. I won't do any of them, but if I had to choose. If someone put a gun to my head and said 'You've got to do another special' it would be Derek. Because it's a contained world, it's really sweet, it's ongoing, things don't change and I think I miss him as a character most. So Derek."

Derek originally aired on Channel 4 in 2012 as a broadcast pilot and ended in 2014 after two series and special. The comedy saw Gervais play Derek Noakes, a retirement home worker who loves animals and cares deeply for old people because they're kind and funny and tell him stories about the olden days.

Kerry Godliman played Derek's best friend Hannah, who is a care worker at the home and like Derek, puts other people first.

But with Gervais recently revealing that Netflix have already agreed to buy his next stand-up show after Supernature as well as his next scripted series following the upcoming third and final series of After Life, fans may be waiting a long time if he ever was to make another episode of Derek.

One initiative which organically grew from Ricky Gervais' live broadcasts is his current partnership with BrewDog - Street Dog - which raises awareness for dog adoption charities Dogs on the Streets and All Dogs Matter by helping dogs find new homes.

For a limited time only, BrewDog's Punk IPA beer cans are showcasing profiles of some of the charities’ dogs who are on the hunt for new families. 100% of all the profits generated from the sales of Street Dog are split evenly between Dogs on the Streets and All Dogs Matter.

The Office, Extras, Derek, After Life and Humanity are available now on Netflix
