But why has he returned?

EastEnders fans were surprised today when Walford’s infamous serial killer Gray Atkins returned to the soap as Toby-Alexander Smith reprises the role for a short stint.

Gray left Albert Square back in 2022 when he was incarcerated for his many crimes, including the murders of Walford’s beloved residents, Chantelle Atkins, Kush Kazemi and Tina Carter.

Currently serving a life sentence, Gray enlists the help of his grandmother Sheila to get close to ex-wife Chelsea Fox when news of son Jordan’s accident reaches him…

Whilst his motives are currently unknown, it’s safe to say that even from afar, Gray will do his best to inflict chaos on those who used to be closest to him…

Speaking about returning to EastEnders, Toby-Alexander Smith said "It’s been very surreal returning to EastEnders and stepping back into Gray’s shoes. He’s one of the most complex characters I’ve had the opportunity to play and revisiting him after several years has been an exciting challenge to get my teeth into. Exploring who Gray is now has been, fascinating, and I’m excited for the audience to see this version of him and watch the storyline play out."

To which Executive Producer Ben Wadey, added "We’re delighted to welcome Toby-Alexander Smith back to the role of Gray Atkins. Although his character remains in prison, it will soon become apparent to viewers that Gray’s physical separation from Walford is no match for his levels of manipulation."

EastEnders continues Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One with first look episodes available from 6am on BBC iPlayer

Nice little tool. The name generator offers enough variety that you can tweak the results instead of starting from scratch.
