Ted Lasso is BACK!



This week's best telly includes the highly anticipated return of Ted Lasso to Apple TV, a Magical Sitcom Tour on U&Gold courtesy of Joe Wilkinson and David Earl, and Mo Gilligan fronts his first Netflix documentary, Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy.


Also this week, Ricky Gervais returns with his brand new Netflix comedy, an animation called Alley Cats, Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis team up for new Disney+ drama The Shards and Gugu Mbatha-Raw leads Sky Atlantic's new supernatural thriller, Possession.


Elsewhere, Lioness returns to Paramount+ for its third season, and Celebrity Hunted is back on Channel 4.

 RETURNING DRAMA

LIONESS


Sunday 2nd August on Paramount+



Lioness returns this week to Paramount+ for its third season, with what promises to be the most personal assignment yet as the intense, female-led espionage thriller goes global.


As chaos ensues, the Lioness team faces its most dangerous mission to date. Hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals collide as Joe, played by Zoe Saldaña, walks the line between duty and home as unseen forces circle her world. Patterns appear where they shouldn’t, names vanish, and paths rearrange.


Guided by Kaitlyn, played by Nicole Kidman, and Westfield, played by Michael Kelly, Joe confronts enemies operating in the shadows, leaving her to reckon with a war that now reaches into every part of her life.


The series also stars Morgan Freeman, Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Genesis Rodriguez, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, Thad Luckinbill, Hannah Love Lanier and Ian Bohen.

 RETURNING REALITY TV

CELEBRITY HUNTED

Celebrity Hunted returns this week to Channel 4 for its seventh series, as twelve famous faces go fugitive in the real-life thriller. But can they survive 14 days on the run from an elite team of hunters?


The 12 celebrities on the run in aid of Stand Up To Cancer are: father and daughter performers Brian and Lucy Conley; Strictly pros Amy Dowden and Carlos Gu; presenters JJ Chalmers and Sophie Morgan; comedians Jen Brister and Laura Smyth; reality stars and content creators Chris Taylor and Toby Aromolaran; and presenters Scarlette and Stuart Douglas.


In hot pursuit are Chief Ray Howard and his army of brainy and brawny Hunters, and the chase begins with the celebrities flying through central London in two helicopters, triggering a dramatic pursuit through the capital's famous skyscrapers as the celebs flee from the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich as fast as they can.

JOE AND DAVID'S MAGICAL SITCOM TOUR

Launching this week on U&Gold is Joe and David's Magical Sitcom Tour, a new series following comedians and sitcom obsessives Joe Wilkinson and David Earl as they set out to indulge their passion for their favourite British comedies.


Both have spent years starring in and writing their own sitcoms, and now they’re turning their attention to the shows that made them laugh the most. Taking it in turns to plan surprise days out for each other, the pair revisit the comedy classics that lodged themselves in their hearts years ago and never left.


In each episode, Joe and David hunt down filming locations, pore over forgotten details, recreate classic moments and meet the people who were actually there when television history was made.


Along the way they uncover previously untold stories about the accidents, quirks of fate and tiny decisions that led to the creation of comedy gold, while bickering and gently ribbing each other in the way only best mates truly can.


Episode one focuses on Porridge, with Fawlty Towers and The Office covered in later episodes.

BIG CHICKEN: A FAST FOOD CONSPIRACY

Launching this week on Netflix is Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy, a new documentary which spotlights the fast food industry and sees Mo put his body to the test in a bold experiment.


In his first Netflix documentary, Mo Gilligan investigates our global fried chicken obsession and the hidden costs behind our cravings. A self-proclaimed lover of the food, Mo puts his body to the test in a bold experiment by eating fried chicken three times a day for 28 days straight.


Over the course of the month, he embarks on an eye-opening journey from South London to the United States to reveal the historical origins of fried chicken and the social, economic and industrial forces driving our mass consumption of it, from fast-food chains to large-scale farming, and the impact on our health, our planet and the way we eat.


As a Black British comedian, Mo also seeks to reframe perceptions of the dish by confronting negative stereotypes associated with it, examining how it's been culturally appropriated and advertised in today's market.


Uncovering shocking revelations along the way, Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy encourages Mo to reckon with the unsettling realities behind his favourite takeaway, sparking greater curiosity about the origins of our food and a more informed approach to the choices we make about what we eat.

TED LASSO


Wednesday 5th August on Apple TV



Ted Lasso returns this week to Apple TV for its fourth series, as Ted returns to Richmond to take on his biggest challenge yet. Coaching a second-division women’s football team.


Throughout the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.


It stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift, alongside new additions Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely.

POSSESSION

Launching this week on Sky Atlantic is Possession, a new five-part supernatural thriller written and created by Karla Crome, which blends eerie mystery with the vibrant energy of Jamaica, following one woman’s journey into long-buried secrets, identity and the past’s enduring hold on the present.


It stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as an ambitious young mixed-race lawyer who travels to Jamaica to challenge an inheritance claim made by a local man against wealthy white aristocrat Oliver Connaught. But the case takes an unsettling turn when Claudia discovers that the disputed estate is the very place that has haunted her nightmares: Hope Hill, the Connaught family’s former plantation.


As Claudia and Oliver dig deeper, they uncover a disturbing link between the plantation’s brutal past and the injustices still shaping the present.

 BRAND NEW DRAMA

THE SHARDS


Thursday 6th August on Disney+



Launching this week on Disney+ is The Shards, a new drama from Ryan Murphy, based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name.


Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence.


At its centre is Bret, played by Igby Rigney, an aspiring writer and keenly observant teenager whose reality begins to unravel with the arrival of a mysterious and magnetic new student, Robert Mallory, played by Homer Gere. Transferring in just before his senior year, Robert’s appearance coincides with the growing terror of The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers across the city.


Alongside Bret is his elite social circle, which consists of Susan Reynolds, played by Kaia Gerber, Debbie Schaffer and Thom Wright, a glamorous and deeply entangled group drawn into a life of wealth, beauty, parties and excess.


The promise of their youth is contrasted with the dark and cynical world of the adults surrounding them, played by Terry Schaffer, Liz Schaffer and Steven Reinhardt.


The series also stars Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner and Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood, Jordan Roth, Owen Painter and Daniel Dale in recurring roles.

RICKY GERVAIS' ALLEY CATS


Friday 7th August on Netflix



Launching this week on Netflix is Alley Cats, a new adult animated comedy from Ricky Gervais which follows a gang of foul-mouthed feral cats who cause havoc while musing on the meaning of life and fighting for survival in a brutal human world.


The series follows the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats from all walks of society, who seek companionship while ruminating on everyday life.


From the funny to the absurd, the series is packed with Gervais’ signature style of heart and social commentary that audiences have come to expect.


The series features the voices of Ricky Gervais and many of his After Life cast members, including Diane Morgan, Joe Wilkinson, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Tom Basden, Jo Hartley, Tony Way and Andrew Brooke, plus Natalie Cassidy.
