FIRST LOOK Champion

Six new images from Candice Carty-Williams' upcoming BBC One musical drama Champion have been released including a first look at newcomers Déja J Bowens as Vita and Ray BLK as best friend Honey.

Champion is Candice Carty-Williams' first TV project and tells the explosive story of what happens when fame collides with family and is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix.

It follows Rap sensation Bosco Champion, played by Malcolm Kamulete who is ready to dominate the music industry once more. But when his dutiful younger sister Vita, played by newcomer Déja J Bowens, has her talent discovered by Bosco’s rival, Bulla, she steps out of her brother's shadow to become a performer in her own right.

A move which sets the Champion siblings against one another and tears apart the whole family in the process.

Ray BLK stars as Vita’s best friend Honey alongside Nadine Marshall and Ray Fearon as Bosco and Vita’s parents Aria and Beres Champion and Jo Martin as Bosco’s manager Dawn.

The eight-part musical drama also stars Kerim Hassan, Adeyinka Akinrinade, Tom Forbes, Genesis Lynea, Karl Collins, Francis Lovehall, Corey Weekes and Rachel Adedeji

Described as a love letter to Black British music and set in south London, Champion promises to celebrate a sound that has long been the beating heart of our culture.

The series will air on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix globally and will feature original music written and produced by some of the leading musicians this country has to offer with Ray BLK and Ghetts serving as Music Executives.

Champion will be produced by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor with the first block being directed by John Ogunmuyiwa and blocks two and three will be directed by Adeyemi Michael and Christiana Ebohon-Green.

Other writers contributing to the series alongside Candice Carty-Williams, include Ameir Brown, Isis Davis, Emma Dennis-Edwards and Edem Wornoo.
