FIRST LOOK Inside No.9 (Series 5)

BBC Two have just released a first look trailer for the fifth series of Inside No.9 which sees Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton joined by guest stars Maxine Peake, David Morrissey, Kadiff Kirwan and Jenna Coleman.

It's the first new glimpse of series five we've had since February 2019 when the BBC released the image above which shows guest stars Ralf Little and David Morrissey as football referees in The Referee’s a W***er, which we now know will be the first episode.

The episode takes place during a crunch-clash between United and Rovers in the last match of the season, which is all safely in the care of the four match officials. Expect a tale of promotion, relegation, corruption, and so, so much more.

We also know that other guest stars across the series - who aren't seen in the trailer - include Jill Halfpenny, Steve Speirs, Tom Goodman-Hill, Fionn Whitehead, Debbie Rush and Ioanna Kimbook.

And following a recent screening at the BFI, the title and synopsis for another episode, The Stakeout was revealed. The episode follows two police officers on night shift who have time to get to know each other. But PC Thompson’s previous partner died in a brutal attack less than a month ago and the forensics have gone missing... and PC Varney is beginning to ask a lot of awkward questions.

The new six-part series promises to stay true to the show’s anthology format with each episode bringing an original story, a cast of new characters and surprising twists in the most unexpected of places. Plus, Steve Pemberton will return to direct one episode for the first time since Cold Comfort and Nana’s Party.
