Melanie's hopes are dashed after her date turns out to be Vic in Neighbours

But what does his return mean for his family?

 5-11 OCTOBER

A ball of excited nerves for her date with Vic, Melanie confesses to Krista that she’s hoping he will be the one.

Having no idea who Melanie is dating, Krista reassures her and the date gets off to an awkward start, but Melanie and Vic quickly hit their groove and their connection grows.

But when Jane and Nicolette see Vic at The Waterhole, recriminations fly and Melanie is devastated to realise who Vic really is. When Vic tells her they can’t possibly see each other again, Melanie wholeheartedly agrees. But they both have private regrets.

When Vic insists on waiting for Byron to explain exactly why he’s back, the family are thrown when he admits he made a huge mistake abandoning them after discovering he was in complete remission and wants to earn their forgiveness.

While Byron tells Vic fiercely there is no way he will ever be forgiven, Nicolette stays more quiet. Afterwards, Byron points out she’s always been too quick to forgive and forget when it comes to Vic, but she insists this time will be different.

As he continues trying to put right his past wrongdoing, Vic apologises sincerely to Leo for backing out of the deal to buy into the vineyard, but receives no absolution.

Next, he tries reaching out to Jane again, hopeful she might understand the emotional overload he was experiencing upon learning that his death was no longer imminent. But she remains completely mistrustful.

Later, Vic tells Byron that he wants to give him and Nicolette $100,000 as recompense for the larger amount he promised them and then couldn’t deliver on. However, Byron doesn’t want it as he doesn’t want to let Vic salvage his conscience, nor does he want to rely on another promise which will likely be broken.

When Vic tries a heartfelt plea, Byron unexpectedly softens the tiniest degree. But later when Vic approaches Nicolette, expecting that out of everyone she will be the most open towards him, he suffers his biggest setback. She’s offended at being last on his apology tour, feeling like he’s taken her for granted and can’t understand the ease with which he left her last time.

Given her own current pain at being separated from Isla for even short periods, Nicolette doesn’t let Vic off the hook for his selfishness anymore and wishes he’d just leave town.

Meanwhile, having had tome to consider Vic’s offer of $100K, Byron cautiously decides he’s open to it, to reduce his debt without forgiving Vic. But when Nicolette learns what’s being proposed, she refuses to have anything to do with it. not wanting to feel beholden to their father in any way.

When Jane encourages Nicolette to think about the financial implications of turning the money down, a conflicted Nicolette starts to waver. Taking the lead to ensure her children remain protected, Jane meets with Vic and informs him that if her children do accept the money, he can’t use it as a way to earn the family’s forgiveness.

With Vic left deflated, a sympathetic Melanie takes pity on him and offers to join him for a consolatory drink, though it’s strictly as friends.
