 BRAND NEW DRAMA

WILD CHERRY

Saturday 15th November at 9pm on BBC One

Nicôle Lecky's new drama Wild Cherry launches this week on BBC One, and stars Carmen Ejogo as Lorna, a self-made, successful black businesswoman from South London who has worked hard to be where she is and best friend Juliet, played by Eve Best, a woman born into the privileged gated community they both call home.

Daughters Grace and Allegra, played by Imogen Faires and Allegra are BFFs and live a life other teenagers can only dream of. A safe haven for the super-rich and their little darlings, Richford Estate is a place where bad things never happen.

Until, that is, Grace and Allegra are implicated in a shocking scandal at their exclusive private school, and Juliet and Lorna are forced to take sides, pushing their friendship to breaking point.

As toxic secrets and lies ripple through the idyllic town, cracks within the community threaten to reveal the elitist ugliness and betrayal beneath.

Set in a private enclave in the Home Counties, the six-part drama promises to be a provocative and deliciously honest look at mother/daughter relationships in a haze of social media, hidden apps and peer pressure that asks: how far will we go to protect our children? And just how much do teenage girls know about the women raising them? If the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, then who is leading these girls astray?

 BRAND NEW DRAMA

SUMMERWATER

Sunday 16th to Tuesday 18th November at 9pm on Channel 4

Channel 4's new drama Summerwater, based on Sarah Moss' novel and written by John Donnelly, is a thrilling and compulsive drama about relationships, sex, identity, and the inability to escape oneself. Summerwater takes us on a journey of wit, heart, and tragedy and stars Shirley Henderson, Dougray Scott and more.

An unflinching yet empathetic look at human nature across generations, the series provides a riveting portrait of the divided nation that is modern Britain. Each episode is set over the same 24 hours and seen through the different perspectives of the inhabitants in each cabin. In a Scottish holiday park enduring unpredictable weather, the residents of Summerwater attempt to escape life's problems in the serenity of isolation.

Far from a relaxing retreat, Summerwater turns out to be a mysterious, all-knowing place, where residents are confronted with their deepest desires and darkest truths. Weaving together the lives of several families, as they are observed closely from their disparate cabins, Summerwater shows how the simmering tensions between holidaymakers leads to a devastating climax.

 BRAND NEW DRAMA

COOPER & FRY

Tuesday 18th November at 9pm on 5

Based on Stephen Booth's bestselling novels, 5's new drama Cooper & Fry is set in the mystery-shrouded Peak District and follows two mismatched young detectives: affable local Ben Cooper, played by Robert James-Collier, and guarded newcomer Diane Fry, played by Mandip Gill.

After a body is unearthed on a Derbyshire farm during recent renovations, DC Ben Cooper is tasked to investigate and partners up with DC Diane Fry, newly transferred from Leeds but under somewhat mysterious circumstances.

As Fry gets used to policing in the countryside, local Cooper isn’t too keen to have to show a new person the ropes. But the two detectives must get past their initial awkwardness and differing approaches in a search for the truth.

Aided by DS Todd Eland and DI Paul Hitchens, the two detectives dig into the murky history of Tanglewood Farm by quizzing elderly ex-owner Raymond Carlisle until they receive news from Dr Juliana Taylor. A second body has been uncovered at the farm. And this body is missing its head.

As Cooper teaches Fry about local Edendale folklore surrounding a severed head known as ‘Screaming Billy’, disturbing truths emerge that cast a black shadow over the town and lead Cooper and Fry into a deadly fight for justice.

PLAY FOR TODAY

Thursday 20th November at 9pm on 5

5's revival of Play For Today continues this week with Big Winners which stars Sue Johnston and Paul Copley as Edith and Arthur Thistle, who have never lived lavishly and always scraped by. But one evening, after Edith has made Arthur's tea, she comes in to find Arthur sat open-mouthed, staring at numbers on a TV screen. Lottery numbers. They've won. 14 million pounds.

Arthur, like a Lancashire Grandpa Joe, springs to his feet and begins reeling off all the ways they can spend the money. He talks of holidays, houses, cars, food. It’s all there for the taking. Arthur monologues like a steam train until Edith stops him in his tracks with a gently uttered wish of her own, a wish that stops their world in its tracks. Arthur looks at Edith, aghast. Edith looks at Arthur, surprised herself. But she can’t unsay it now.

And just like that, over an hour in real time, 53 years of suppressed emotions come crashing to the surface. Edith’s frustrations; opportunities, the lack of love, the silent regrets, the years of unspoken dreams; are all laid bare. Arthur’s inability to move forward, his emotional unavailability, the missed chances for real connection and adventure; it all spills out. They enter into a fierce confrontation, with each blow landing harder than the last. As Arthur puts it, “We’ve got maybe six years left. Collectively!”

But after half a century of living with a distinct lack of hope, Edith’s not giving up on the future she’d always dreamed of. With every accusation and home-truth swung, her grip gets tighter and tighter on the winning ticket.
